AP2HI Highlights Small-Scale Tuna Fisheries at IISM Expo 2025

May 25, 2025

Jakarta, May 10, 2025 – At the heart of the vibrant International Indonesia Seafood & Meat (IISM) Expo 2025 held at JIExpo Kemayoran Jakarta, Indonesian Pole & Line and Handline Fisheries Association (AP2HI) once again brought the stories of the sea, fishers, and hope to life.

This year, AP2HI took the stage not alone, but in collaboration with two of its dedicated members: PT Benteng Laut Sejahtera and Aruna. Showcasing the face of inclusive, sustainable, and globally competitive small-scale tuna fisheries.

Indonesia Seafood Pavilion Officially Opened by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF)

The Indonesia Seafood Pavilion at the IISM Expo was officially inaugurated on May 7, 2025, by Mr. Erwin Dwiyana. He is Director of Marketing at the Directorate General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products (DJPDSPKP), MMAF.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Erwin highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and industry players to continuously strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian marine products, particularly those rooted in sustainability.

“Indonesia’s seafood sector holds great potential for growth in the global market, especially when supported by a transparent and inclusive supply chain like what AP2HI is showcasing,” he noted.

Telling Fishers’ Stories Through Products and Technology

At the AP2HI booth, visitors were greeted not just by MSC-certified tuna products, but also by the stories behind them, real-life narratives of pole-and-line and handline fishers from across Indonesia who catch each fish one by one, with care and responsibility for the ocean’s health.

Through AP2HI’s traceability technology, visitors could follow the journey of each tuna. From the fisher, to the landing site, to the final product. This transparent supply chain is a crucial step in ensuring that what ends up on the plate comes from socially and environmentally responsible sources.

Inclusive Collaboration: From the Community, By the Community

The participation of PT Benteng Laut Sejahtera and Aruna in the AP2HI pavilion brought a deeper, richer narrative that building an equitable fishery requires collective effort.

PT Benteng Laut Sejahtera, based in a coastal processing area, showcased premium-grade tuna products for export developed through strong partnerships with fisher communities. Meanwhile, Aruna, a tech-based social enterprise, presented their digital solutions that enable fishers to connect directly with broader markets.

Centering Social Values in Fisheries

In meaningful conversations with visitors throughout the expo, AP2HI emphasized the often-overlooked social dimension of fisheries. Discussions explored the critical role of small-scale fishers, not only as seafood producers, but as guardians of the sea and economic anchors for coastal families.

Through the four-day exhibition from May 7–10, AP2HI invited all stakeholders to see beyond the commodity, and to recognize the human side of the supply chain.

“Fishers are not just producers. They are stewards of the sea, keepers of tradition, and an essential part of Indonesia’s identity on the global stage,” said Nuriasih Nababan, Communication & Liaison Manager of AP2HI.

IISM Expo 2025: A Platform for Collaboration and Transformation

As one of the largest exhibitions in the seafood and meat industry, the IISM Expo served as a vital platform for industry players to showcase innovations, expand networks, and foster new partnerships.

For AP2HI, it was the ideal stage to deliver a message that sustainability and inclusivity are not optional add-ons, but fundamental pillars of Indonesia’s fisheries future.

By bringing real stories from the sea to the expo floor, AP2HI, PT Benteng Laut Sejahtera, and Aruna demonstrated that cross-sector collaboration is key to building a fishery that is not only productive, but also fair and resilient.

A small step from this expo, for a vast ocean and a better tomorrow.
