From Fisher’s Wives to Supermarket Shelves in Ambon
Empowering Fisher’s Wives Through Sustainable Fish Processing
Previously featured in Indonesian Tuna, the inspiring journey of Tuna Besty (fisher’s wives) continues to unfold. What began as a small initiative to empower women in Tanjung Air Panas, Tulehu Village, Central Maluku, has now grown into a thriving business.
With the support of the Association of Pole & Line and Handline Indonesia (AP2HI), Tuna Besty have successfully developed high-quality processed fish products that have recently entered major supermarkets in Ambon. This achievement marks a significant milestone in their journey toward economic independence and sustainability.
From Idea to Market The Journey of Tuna Besty
Established in July 2022, Tuna Besty was initiated with a simple yet impactful mission to improve the livelihoods of fishermen’s households. AP2HI provided training and guidance, helping the group transform raw fish resources into value-added products.

After two years of continuous learning and product development, Tuna Besty successfully launched three main products Shredded Tuna Floss (Abon Tuna), Tuna Chili Sauce (Sambal Tuna), and Squid Chili Sauce (Sambal Cumi).
These products not only offer great taste but also promote sustainable fisheries by utilizing fish trimmings and leftover squid bait that would otherwise go to waste.
Overcoming Challenges in Fish Processing
The road to success was not without challenges. The group initially experimented with five different products, including tuna skin crackers, tuna pempek, and tuna siomay. However, several obstacles arose, such as processing difficulties due to limited equipment, difficulties in achieving the right taste, and maintaining product consistency.
After extensive trials, the women of Tuna Besty decided to focus on floss and chili sauces, as these were the most feasible to produce with their available skills and resources. By repurposing tuna loin trimmings and unused squid bait, they found a way to minimize waste while creating products with high market value.

Gaining Certification and Expanding Distribution
A major breakthrough for Tuna Besty was obtaining the Home Industry Food Permit (PIRT), which allowed them to expand beyond online sales. Previously, they could only sell in small batches through social media, limiting their market reach.
Now, with PIRT certification, their products can be distributed in major supermarkets across Ambon, enabling them to reach a much broader customer base. In the future, Tuna Besty also aims to obtain additional certifications to further enhance product quality and market expansion.
The Power of Collaboration and Community Growth
Tuna Besty’s journey highlights the power of collaboration and resilience. Through continuous support from AP2HI, the group has not only built a successful business but also strengthened teamwork and leadership skills among its members. They have learned to work together, communicate effectively, and find solutions to challenges while maintaining their shared vision.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Tuna Besty aims to expand its market presence and continue empowering more fishermen’s wives to achieve financial independence. AP2HI remains committed to supporting the group, hoping their success story will inspire other coastal communities to embrace innovation, sustainability, and economic empowerment.
